The Fukuyama Hills area in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, where the Ecchu Sansuke Yaki pottery is located, is blessed with a rich pottery clay, and has been used for manufacturing household utensils and tiles, starting with Sue ware from the Nara and Heian periods. Sansuke Taniguchi (1906 - 1908), who was one of the tile manufacturers, and his eldest son, Taishichiro Taniguchi (1986 - 1933), began making everyday utensils such as pots, bowls, and plates in a tile kiln, and laid the foundation for Sansuke ware.
