The 117 series is a DC commuter train developed by Japanese National Railways (JNR) that was introduced in 1979.
To compete with the well-equipped express trains of private railways, the trains were equipped with more advanced features than previous commuter trains, such as convertible cross seats similar to those used on the Kiha 66 and 67 series and wood-grain interior decoration, incorporating regional variations into the uniform JNR rolling stock.
Once the 221 series was introduced on the Special Rapid Service, the 117 series was gradually withdrawn from Special Rapid service and instead diverted to various regions, with regional liveries appearing.
Some 117 series are still in service today, in areas such as Okayama.
