----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Thirteen Buddhas were first enshrined during the Muromachi period. It was believed that if the bereaved family performed memorial services for the deceased, they would be blessed with protection. Since then, it has been a traditional Japanese custom to use them as the principal image for 13 memorial services, from the seventh day after death until the 33rd anniversary of death.
The pillow image was what Kukai carried with him at all times. It is said that if you carry the Buddha encased in a small shrine with you every day and place it next to your pillow when you go to sleep, you will receive even more merit. This time, we will be introducing the Five Buddhas, One Myo-o, Seven Bodhisattvas, and the Thirteen Buddhas Buddha Altar carved into boxwood.
Thirteen wooden Buddhas that can be placed in the altar for daily worship.
