Kasukabe City in Saitama Prefecture has long been known as a distribution center for wheat. At the time, the production of "straw Sanada," made by bleaching wheat straw, flattening it, and weaving it, was a side job for farmers. The origins of Tanaka Hat Shop also date back to this time. Around 1880, while working as a farmer, Tanaka Hat Shop began making "Sanada," a braided cord made by weaving wheat, as a side job. It was about 20 years later, around 1897, that the shop began making hats in earnest. Even now, more than a century later, Tanaka Hat Shop continues to preserve the good old traditional techniques while creating products that incorporate modern needs, and is now one of Japan's leading long-established hat manufacturers, to the point that it is said that "when you think of Japanese straw hats, you think of Tanaka Hats."
